Mbaqanga

Genre

The African jazz that grew out of marabi and kwela from around 1950 and became the popular music of the townships. Zacks Nkosi's "Jackpot" is an mbaqanga tune, and Robbie Jansen counted mbaqanga among the styles a working Cape Town musician simply had to know.

Some Johannesburg musicians heard an older mbaqanga tune in it, and said so for decades.

Mason notes that the melody strongly resembles "Jackpot", recorded by the saxophonist Zacks Nkosi around 1960, and reports that the Sunday Times wrote in 2006 that Nkosi and his son believed "Mannenberg" was taken from it. Mason himself rejects the copy claim.
