How Cape Town's wind works

Cape Town sits on a narrow peninsula between two oceans, with Table Mountain acting as a 1,085-metre wind-break in the middle of the city. That geography produces the most unusual thing about the local weather: which beach is comfortable depends less on temperature than on wind direction.

The south-easter (Cape Doctor)

From October to March, the dominant wind is the south-easter. It funnels over Table Mountain, accelerates down the Atlantic Seaboard, and makes Camps Bay, Clifton and Llandudno uncomfortable for hours at a time. The same wind is blocked from False Bay by the peninsula's spine, which is why Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek stay calm on those days.

The north-wester

In winter, cold fronts sweep in from the north-west and bring rain. A light north-wester without a front can leave the Atlantic Seaboard sheltered and False Bay a little rough, reversing the summer pattern. A full frontal north-wester is nobody's idea of a beach day.

Berg wind and other quirks

A berg wind is a hot, dry land wind that arrives a day or two before a cold front. It raises fire risk sharply and makes the city feel like midsummer in July. The "black south-easter" is the same south-easter but thick with cloud draping Table Mountain, overcast and damp at the coast despite the wind.

Using this tool

The live readout above pulls current conditions from OpenWeatherMap and a 12-hour forecast from MET Norway. The verdict cards update automatically: green means go, yellow means workable, red means skip. The peninsula map shows the same read at a glance, with each beach coloured by today's shelter rating.

If the live feed ever fails, the 8-point compass at the bottom of the tool lets you pick a direction manually and see the same recommendations.

Frequently asked

Which Cape Town beach is sheltered when the south-easter blows?

False Bay beaches. Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, Simon's Town and Boulders all stay calm thanks to the peninsula mountains. Avoid Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno and Bloubergstrand on a strong Cape Doctor.

When is the Atlantic Seaboard sheltered?

In light north-westerly or northerly winds. Those directions bring rough conditions to False Bay, reversing the summer pattern. In a full cold-front north-wester, no beach is comfortable.

What is the Cape Doctor?

Cape Town's summer south-easter. It blows from October to March, often for days at a time, and is famously strong on the Atlantic Seaboard after funnelling over Table Mountain.

Which beach is best for kitesurfing?

Bloubergstrand and Big Bay on the West Coast. A strong south-easter blows cross-offshore here, giving flat water and reliable lift.

Is the Table Mountain cable car running today?

It closes when wind at the summit exceeds roughly 60 km/h, or when gusts exceed 90 km/h. On calm or light mornings it is almost certainly running. Book promptly, as those mornings are uncommon in summer.
