South African music quiz

Each round plays short clips of South African recordings, from the township jazz of the 1960s to the amapiano on the radio today, and asks you to name the singer, the decade or the style.

How it works

A round has ten questions. Most of them play a short clip and ask who is singing, which decade the recording comes from or what style of music it is, while the others turn to the history, such as who recorded a well-known song or which city a sound came from.

A right answer is worth 100 points, with up to 100 more for answering quickly, and the clock only starts once the clip is playing. A run of three, five or eight right answers multiplies your points by 1.25, 1.5 or 2, and a perfect round of ten adds a bonus of 500 points.

The Daily Challenge is the same round for every player and changes at midnight South African time. When you finish, you can post your score to that day's board under a nickname, or under your own name if you are signed in.

About the songs

The questions draw on 103 recordings by 85 South African artists, among them Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie, Lucky Dube, Mandoza, Black Coffee, Tyla and Kabza De Small, as well as Cape Town musicians such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Freshlyground and Beatenberg.

Release years refer to the original recording; where the exact year could not be confirmed, the quiz asks only about the decade or leaves the date out altogether. The South African Music Graph traces how these artists, styles and places connect.
