About this place

Dolphin Beach is one of the kite spots at Bloubergstrand on Table Bay, and the Kitespot location page calls it very popular. MACkiteboarding's travel guide places it next to the Dolphin Beach Hotel, about half a mile from Kite Beach. From the water you look across the bay to Lion's Head and Table Mountain, and on a windy afternoon the bay fills with kites. It can get crowded in peak season, and the advice on the Kitespot page is to head upwind for more space.

The riding depends on the wind. MACkiteboarding's travel guide puts the kitesurfing season at November to March, with the most consistent days from December to February, and the Kitespot location page lists December to February as high season and October, November and March as mid season. Kitespot lists Dolphin Beach as working in south-easterly, southerly and south-westerly to north-westerly winds.

For lessons, High Five Kitesurf School on Beach Boulevard in Blouberg runs a summer season from October to March and is closed from April to September. It teaches in front of the school rather than at Dolphin Beach, and it opens on windy days from 8 am until sunset. MACkiteboarding says most riders wear a 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit because the water is cold Atlantic.

What it costs

High Five Kitesurf School listed starting prices including VAT of R2,700 for a three-hour group lesson and R2,700 for a two-hour private lesson on its website when we read it in October 2026; the page gives no effective date.

Getting there

Dolphin Beach is on the Bloubergstrand beachfront, which MACkiteboarding's travel guide puts roughly 20 km from Cape Town's city centre. Parking and exact access points were not confirmed.

Safety

Visiting safely

  • The beach can be busy in peak season, so head upwind for more room, as the Kitespot location page advises.
  • The water is cold Atlantic, and riders commonly wear a 4/3 or 3/2 wetsuit according to MACkiteboarding's Cape Town guide.
