About this place

Kirstenbosch was set aside in 1913 and covers 528 hectares at the eastern foot of Table Mountain. People come to walk through the indigenous plantings, picnic on the lawns beneath the mountain and stroll the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, which SANBI says is 130 metres long and rises to 12 metres above the ground.

The walkway is informally known as the Boomslang, the Afrikaans word for tree snake. There is no extra charge to walk it, because access is covered by the normal garden ticket, according to SANBI's page for the walkway.

In summer the garden hosts Sunday evening concerts on the lawn. The 2025/26 Summer Sunset Concerts season ran from 23 November 2025 to 29 March 2026, and dates for the next season should be checked on SANBI's events page.

What it costs

The 2026-2027 adult rate was R270 for visitors from outside Africa and SADC, R110 for South African residents and SADC nationals aged 18 and over with ID, R150 for African nationals, R60 for students from a South African institution and R40 for children aged 6 to 17, according to SANBI's fee page in October 2026.

Getting there

The garden lies at the eastern foot of Table Mountain. Entry tickets are sold online through Webtickets, and SANBI says cash payments are no longer accepted.
