About this place

Delheim is a wine estate on the slopes of the Simonsberg, off the R44 between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch. According to the estate's own history page, Hans Otto Hoheisen bought the farm in 1938 as a retirement home for himself and his wife Deli, and the name comes from the German for "Deli's home". The estate is owned by the Sperling family today.

A visit can be as short as a tasting or as long as a lunch. On its visit page, Delheim lists its tasting room as open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The Garden Restaurant serves breakfast from 09:00 to 11:30 and lunch from 12:00 to 15:30, Monday to Sunday. The estate encourages visitors to pre-book on Dineplan, lists bookings@delheim.com for the restaurant, and says the tasting group limit is 15 people; larger groups should email the estate.

Delheim also has walking trails of 2.5 km, 5 km and 10 km on the farm. They need no booking, and a trail permit is sold at reception. If you are tasting, read the safety note below before you decide who drives.

What it costs

Prices read on the estate's visit page on 12 October 2026: Reserve Tasting R165, Premium Tasting R105, Wine & Fynbos Cupcake Pairing R180, and a trail permit of R75 for all ages and all three routes. The page lists no lunch prices; the menu is linked from it. Prices may change, so check the page before you go.

Getting there

According to the estate's contact page, Delheim is on Knorhoek Road, Stellenbosch. Take the Klapmuts exit (Exit 47) off the N1, drive about 7.5 km on the R44 towards Stellenbosch, turn left into Knorhoek Road and follow the signs through Muratie to Delheim. Use a guided tour or a nominated driver rather than driving after a tasting. The estate's cellar door is closed on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

Safety

Visiting safely

  • According to SAnews on 15 January 2026 and eNCA on 30 January 2026, the legal limit for most drivers is 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, or 0.24 mg per 1,000 ml of breath, and exceeding it is a criminal offence.
  • The Department of Transport has announced that it plans to scrap the permitted limit, and Time Out reported on 14 September 2026 that the amendment was still awaiting approvals and was not yet law, so check the current rule before you travel.
  • The simplest plan for a day of tastings is to nominate a designated driver, or to book a guided tour or a hop-on, hop-off minibus.
