Safety and walking

The historic centre, Dorp Street and the university campus are pleasant to walk by day and into the early evening, with municipal safety monitors and campus security visible. After about ten at night the town centre nightlife strip and the streets around it, particularly Bird Street and Merriman Avenue, are where muggings and phone snatches happen; use the university's Walk-With service, the campus shuttles or an e-hailing trip instead of walking. Cloetesville and Idas Valley are residential suburbs that carry the town's gang-shooting risk and are not places to wander, especially after dark. Car break-ins are common, so park in a monitored lot and leave nothing on show.
