Visiting

Sea Point is the easiest base for a first visit without a car. Most short-term lets are flats in the blocks between Main Road and Beach Road, with the promenade a few minutes on foot. Sea-facing units on Beach Road cost the most; a block or two inland is quieter and noticeably cheaper. Before booking, check for a secure entrance, a parking bay if you hire a car, backup power for load-shedding, and whether the building allows short lets, because some sectional-title schemes do not.

Safety and walking

By day the promenade, Main Road and Regent Road are busy and comfortable on foot. After dark, keep to the lit main roads and the promenade near the Pavilion, and take an Uber or Bolt rather than walking longer distances after about 10pm. The most common problems are phone snatching, theft from parked cars and bag theft in restaurants, so keep your phone out of hand on the street and never leave anything visible in a vehicle. The quiet side streets between Main Road and High Level Road and the green belt below Signal Hill are best avoided alone at night. The Sea Point City Improvement District funds extra patrols and cleaning along the strip.

Getting around

MyCiTi routes 108 and 109 run along Main Road and Beach Road and link Sea Point with the V&A Waterfront, the city centre, Camps Bay and Hout Bay; you need a MyCiTi card to board. Uber and Bolt are plentiful and a trip to the CBD takes about ten minutes outside peak. The seafront and Main Road are flat; the streets only steepen towards High Level Road. Street parking is scarce in the evenings and many older blocks have no bays, so confirm parking before hiring a car. The airport is roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic.

Everyday life

Main Road and Regent Road carry the daily needs: Checkers and Pick n Pay supermarkets, Woolworths at Piazza St John, Clicks pharmacies, banks and a post office. The promenade doubles as the local park, with play areas, outdoor gyms, the Sea Point Pavilion pools and the tidal pool at Saunders' Rocks. Cafés and restaurants line Regent Road and Main Road, and Mojo Market is the easy dinner when everyone wants something different. Schools include a French international school, Sea Point Primary and Sea Point High, and the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital is a short drive away on the Foreshore. Expect the south-easter in summer and construction noise on Main Road while new blocks go up.
