Visiting
Clifton is apartments and beach bungalows on a steep west-facing slope, with almost nothing at the budget end. Most short lets are sea-facing flats off Victoria Road or on the streets above, and the view premium is steep. Every property is reached by stairs or a lift shaft cut into the slope, so ask how many steps stand between the parking and the front door before you book, particularly with luggage or small children. Confirm secure parking, because roadside bays are the weak point here, along with backup power and 24-hour security or armed response, which most blocks have.

By day the beaches are busy and overlooked by the homes above them, and 4th Beach has lifeguards, toilets and the steadiest crowd. The most common problem in Clifton is smash-and-grab theft from cars parked along Victoria Road, so leave nothing visible, not even a charging cable, and pack the boot before you arrive rather than at the kerb. On the sand, keep phones and wallets in a bag rather than loose on a towel. After sunset the coves and the staircases connecting them empty out quickly and feel isolated, so head up before the light goes and do not linger on the steps alone. The residential slope above is quiet, walled and privately patrolled.

Clifton has no station, no shops and only a thin bus service: MyCiTi buses along Victoria Road link it with Camps Bay, Sea Point and the city centre, but they run infrequently and you need a MyCiTi card. In practice almost everyone uses a car or a rideshare. Uber and Bolt are reliable and reach the city centre in about fifteen minutes over Kloof Nek and Camps Bay in five. Street parking on Victoria Road is free but fills by mid-morning in summer, and the walk from a parking space to the sand is a long flight of stairs. The airport is roughly 35 to 55 minutes by car.
Everyday life
There are no shops, schools or medical services in Clifton. Camps Bay, five minutes south, has the small supermarket, the pharmacy and the restaurant strip that serve as Clifton's high street, and anything bigger means Sea Point or the city centre. The four beaches are the local park, along with Maiden's Cove and the Lion's Head trails just above. The suburb is sheltered from the south-easter, which is why the coves stay usable when Camps Bay is being sandblasted. Summer weekends bring heavy visitor traffic and full parking, and the city actively enforces its noise by-laws on the sand.
