On 14 August 2016 in Rio, running blind from lane eight with nobody to chase, Wayde van Niekerk won the Olympic 400 metres in 43.03 seconds and broke Michael Johnson's world record, which had stood since 1999. His coach was Ans Botha, a 74-year-old great-grandmother from Bloemfontein. Johnson, commentating for the BBC, called it a massacre.
