Tsotsi wins the Oscar for best foreign-language film
On the night of 5 March 2006 in Los Angeles, Monday morning in South Africa, Tsotsi won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Gavin Hood's film, from Athol Fugard's novel, follows a young gang leader in Johannesburg who finds a baby in the back of a car he has hijacked. It was the first South African film to win the award, and its soundtrack, led by the kwaito star Zola, who also acts in the film, carried kwaito to audiences abroad.
