The Freedom Charter is adopted at Kliptown
On 25 and 26 June 1955 about three thousand delegates gathered on a field in Kliptown for the Congress of the People, having collected demands from across the country for months. Clause by clause they adopted the Freedom Charter, which declares that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white. Armed police arrived on the second afternoon, took over the platform and took delegates' names. The Charter's words are echoed in the preamble of the 1996 Constitution.
