On 27 April 1994 South Africans of every colour voted in the same election for the first time. The queues formed before dawn and in many places lasted the whole day, snaking around blocks and across fields; special voting for the old and the sick had opened the day before, and in some areas polling was extended to the 29th. Nearly twenty million votes were cast. The ANC won almost 63 percent, and the date became Freedom Day.
