The final whistle at Ellis Park

Extra time, 24 June 1995, Ellis Park. Joel Stransky's drop goal had put the Springboks ahead of New Zealand 15–12 and the whole country was holding its breath. When the whistle went, a stadium that had once been the preserve of white South Africa erupted, and so, for once, did many townships. Nelson Mandela walked onto the field in a green Springbok jersey with the captain's number six on his back and handed the cup to Francois Pienaar, who said on the field: "We didn't do it for 60,000 South Africans, but for 43 million South Africans."
