Soweto's schoolchildren march
This moment describes violence or loss under apartheid. It is told through the people who lived it, from the sources linked below.
On the morning of 16 June 1976 thousands of Soweto schoolchildren marched against a decree that half their subjects be taught in Afrikaans. Police met them with tear gas and then live rounds. Twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson was among the first killed; Sam Nzima's photograph of Mbuyisa Makhubu carrying his body, with Hector's sister Antoinette running alongside, went around the world. The uprising spread across the country and the date is now Youth Day.
