On 19 August 2009, aged eighteen, Caster Semenya from Ga-Masehlong in Limpopo won the 800 metres at the World Championships in Berlin in 1:55.45, South Africa's first world title in a middle-distance event. On the day of the final it became public that the sport's governing body had asked her to undergo sex verification tests, questions that would follow her career for years. At home she was welcomed as a champion.
