Sarah Baartman is buried at Hankey
Sarah Baartman, a Khoikhoi woman taken to Europe in 1810 and exhibited as the Hottentot Venus, died in Paris in 1815; her remains stayed in a museum there for most of two centuries. France passed a law to return them in 2002. On 9 August that year, National Women's Day, she was buried on a hill above the Gamtoos valley near Hankey, in the valley where she is believed to have been born, with President Mbeki speaking and the burial broadcast live.
