The Rhodes statue is lifted off its plinth
A month after a student threw excrement at the statue of Cecil Rhodes on the University of Cape Town's upper campus, the university council voted to remove it. On 9 April 2015, at 17:37, a crane lifted the bronze off the plinth where it had sat since 1934, in front of a crowd of students chanting and filming. Within months the protests had grown into Fees Must Fall, and the argument about statues travelled to Oxford and beyond.
