In June 1974 Abdullah Ibrahim, then still recording as Dollar Brand, went into the UCA studio in Cape Town with Basil Coetzee on tenor saxophone, Robbie Jansen, Monty Weber, Morris Goldberg and Paul Michaels, and the producer Rashid Vally. The tune they recorded, named after a Cape Flats township built for families moved out of District Six and other parts of the city under apartheid, was "Mannenberg". It became an anthem of hope and resistance on the Cape Flats and beyond. Coetzee was known as Basil "Manenberg" Coetzee for the rest of his life.
