Mandela reads Ingrid Jonker's poem to Parliament
In his first State of the Nation Address on 24 May 1994, Nelson Mandela opened by quoting Ingrid Jonker's poem "Die kind" ("The Child"), written after the police shootings of 1960. He called her an Afrikaner woman who transcended a particular experience and became a South African, an African and a citizen of the world. Jonker had taken her own life at Three Anchor Bay in 1965, aged 31.
