Nelson Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, at about ten to nine on the evening of 5 December 2013, aged 95, after months of illness. At a quarter to midnight President Jacob Zuma told the country on television: our nation has lost its greatest son. People gathered outside the house in Houghton and in Vilakazi Street in Soweto through the night, and sang.
