On 16 July 1963 Miriam Makeba, already known abroad for "The Click Song", appeared before the United Nations Special Committee on Apartheid in New York and asked the world to boycott the South African government. The government, which had cancelled her passport in 1960, answered by taking away her citizenship and banning her records. She spoke to the committee again in March 1964 and did not return home until 1990.
