On 10 December 1961 Chief Albert Luthuli, president of the banned ANC, received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo: the prize for 1960, held over and presented a year late, and the first to go to a Black African. The government had confined him to his home district around Groutville and let him travel on a passport valid for only ten days. He gave his Nobel lecture the next day. Five days later, on 16 December, Umkhonto we Sizwe set off its first bombs.
