On 2 March 1988, at the 30th Grammy Awards in New York, Ladysmith Black Mambazo won Best Traditional Folk Recording for Shaka Zulu, the album Paul Simon had produced after working with them on Graceland. Joseph Shabalala had formed the group in the early 1960s around the isicathamiya singing of Zulu migrant workers' hostels. It was the first of several Grammys for a sound born in the hostels of Durban and Johannesburg.
