Philip Kgosana leads 30,000 marchers into Cape Town
Nine days after Sharpeville, on 30 March 1960, Philip Kgosana, a 23-year-old PAC organiser who had left his studies at the University of Cape Town, led about 30,000 people from Langa and Nyanga into Cape Town to the Caledon Square police station. The march was orderly and the police, outnumbered, negotiated. Kgosana agreed to send the crowd home in exchange for a meeting with the minister of justice. When he returned that evening for the meeting, he was arrested. De Waal Drive, part of the road the marchers took, is now Philip Kgosana Drive.
