"Grazing in the Grass" tops the American chart
In July 1968 Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the Grass", a trumpet instrumental cut almost as an afterthought to fill an album, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks. Masekela had left South Africa in 1960, after Sharpeville; a few years earlier Louis Armstrong had sent a trumpet to his school band. A boy from Witbank had the biggest song in America.
