Nadine Gordimer wins the Nobel Prize in Literature
On 3 October 1991 the Swedish Academy announced Nadine Gordimer as the first South African winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the first woman to receive it in 25 years. Several of her books had been banned at home. She heard the news in New York, and in December she gave her Nobel lecture, "Writing and Being", in Stockholm.
