On the morning of 10 April 1993, Easter Saturday, Chris Hani, general secretary of the Communist Party and the most popular ANC leader after Mandela, was shot dead outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg. A neighbour, an Afrikaner woman, noted the getaway car's number plate and the killer was arrested within minutes. Anger spread across the country, and more than 70 people died in the unrest that followed. On 13 April Nelson Mandela, not yet president, went on television and asked the country to hold together, and the negotiations survived.
