The Table Mountain cableway opens
On 4 October 1929 the mayor of Cape Town, A. J. S. Lewis, opened the aerial cableway up Table Mountain before more than 200 guests. It had cost £60,000 and taken two years to build; the first car carried nineteen passengers and a conductor. The cars have been replaced several times since, most recently with the rotating cabins of 1997, and the ride up now takes about five minutes, half the time it took in 1929.
