On New Year's Day 1988 Annette Heunis, twenty and white, left her family in the Free State town of Wesselsbron and moved into Kutlwanong township outside Odendaalsrus to live with Jerry Tsie, a 22-year-old security officer at a gold mine. The laws that had made their relationship a crime were repealed in 1985, but the Group Areas Act still decided who could live where. Around 21 January police escorted her out, saying she had asked for protection; Tsie said she had been taken without her consent. Eight days later, at midnight on a Saturday, she walked back in and said they would marry. They did, in November 1988.
