Miriam Makeba (1932 to 2008) grew up in Johannesburg and became South Africa's best-known voice in exile after the apartheid government revoked her passport in 1960. She brought songs such as 'Pata Pata' and 'Qongqothwane' to audiences worldwide, spoke against apartheid at the United Nations, and returned home in 1990.
