Safety and walking
By day, walking on Ottery Road, around the shopping centre and through the residential streets is unremarkable, and residents do it routinely. After dark the risk concentrates in a few places: De Wet Road, the open fields near the Civic Centre, and the approaches to Ottery station and the taxi stops. Keep to lit main roads, keep your phone out of your hand, and arrange to be dropped at your gate rather than walking the last blocks. If you use the Cape Flats line, travel at busy times rather than off-peak. Car break-ins and house burglary are the everyday risks, so gates, alarms and armed response earn their cost here.
