Safety and walking

Daytime walking is easy across the suburb, and De Waal Park is busy and safe in daylight. The common problems are property crimes: theft from cars parked on the street, since many older buildings have no bays, and housebreaking at ground level, which picks up in winter when bad weather gives cover. Avoid cutting through De Waal Park after dark, and on the Kloof Street and Buitenkant edges at night keep your phone out of sight and walk on the main road rather than the side streets.
