The story

A long, soft roll is split open and filled with slap chips. On top goes a filling that may be fried polony, masala steak, chicken, calamari or fish, and a sauce, usually achar or peri-peri. The gatsby is cut crossways into portions, and one roll is often enough for four people.

The best-known origin story comes from Athlone on the Cape Flats. Rashaad Pandy of Super Fisheries says that one night in 1976, feeding men who were working for him, he ran out of fish and filled a round Portuguese loaf with chips, fried polony and achar instead. In his telling, someone who tasted it called it a "Gatsby smash", after the film The Great Gatsby, which had recently been showing in Athlone. The story comes from Pandy himself, and accounts differ on who came up with the name.
