SAWS rainfall stations

Every station in the South African Weather Service daily rainfall bulletin, with where it is and how sure that position is: surveyed points are the gauge itself, town-level points are the town or farm it is named after, and province-only points say just which province it is in.

Where the stations are

Stations that share a position, such as a town with two gauges or the province-only stations of one province, are drawn as a single mark whose pop-up lists them all.

  • Surveyed: The station's own position, taken from WMO OSCAR/Surface, the station database that SAWS keeps up to date, and accurate to a few metres.
  • Town-level: The gazetteer position of the town or farm after which the station is named, from which the gauge may stand a few kilometres away.
  • Province only: A point in the middle of the province, which indicates the province of the station and nothing more.

How the register is built

  • Because SAWS publishes the daily rainfall bulletin by station name only, without the positions of its gauges, every position in the register had to be looked up.
  • Surveyed points come from WMO OSCAR/Surface, the World Meteorological Organization's station database, which SAWS keeps up to date as South Africa's national focal point. They are the station's own position, good to a few metres, and carry its WIGOS identifier and elevation.
  • Town-level points are the GeoNames or OpenStreetMap position of the town or farm a station is named after. The gauge can be a few kilometres away; the station pages draw a 5 km circle round the point to show it.
  • Province-only points are placed at the centroid of the province for stations whose site is not known; since they indicate only the province under which a station reports, the search on the rainfall page never offers them as a nearby gauge.
  • The register is rebuilt by hand from OSCAR and the gazetteers, and every change is reviewed before it is published; an OSCAR match lying more than 10 km from the gazetteer point is held back for review instead of being applied.

The register has one row per station, giving its name, province, coordinates, precision, source and identifier, and it may be reused freely with credit to WMO OSCAR/Surface, GeoNames, OpenStreetMap and capetowndata.com.

  • The file describes the stations themselves and does not contain the rainfall readings, which remain those of SAWS.
  • Rows without a province are names held by the coordinate lookup that no bulletin has used yet, and they therefore have no station page.
