The drum is built like a wine cask, from staves and hoops, by people who often worked as coopers.
Denis-Constant Martin describes the goema as a single-headed wooden drum assembled from staves held by metal hoops, made in a wine-making country from materials enslaved people could get. Kirby described it in 1939 as a small cask with a skin nailed over one end.
