What's up in Cape Town ? The Weekly | 4-11 May 2026
May 8, 2026
Your guide to the Mother City
Cape Town moves into the first full week of May with dams at 48.3%, up a full percentage point week-on-week, but still well below the same point last year. The May fuel increase is now in force, the Stormers are away to Ulster on Friday night, and the weekend is split between sunny Saturday plans and a wet, windy Mother's Day.
First May rain, a fuel shock, and a Mother's Day weekend with a weather split
Cape Town enters the 4-10 May week with a more encouraging water number than late April. The latest City dashboard dated 4 May 2026 records 48.3% WCWSS storage, up 1.0 percentage point week-on-week. That is the best movement in weeks, and the clearest sign that the first May fronts have reached the system.
The caveat is still important: the same combined system was at 59.9% at this point in 2025, leaving Cape Town about 11.6 percentage points behind last year. The City still describes the resource status as Early Drought Caution, with continued water-wise use encouraged until winter rainfall becomes consistent.
The sharper household story this week is fuel. The 6 May fuel-price reset is now in force: petrol is up R3.27/l, and wholesale diesel is up R5.27/l after the corrected diesel calculation. For Cape Town motorists, coastal 95 petrol moves to R25.76/l, while coastal 0.005% wholesale diesel moves to about R30.62/l.
On the sport front, the Stormers have flipped the mood after beating Glasgow 48-12 at DHL Stadium. Now comes the road test: Ulster vs DHL Stormers on Friday night at 20:45 in Belfast, followed by Cardiff a week later.
The weekend itself is a classic Cape Town split. Friday is sunny, Saturday still works for outdoor events, and Sunday turns into a proper winter-style Mother's Day with heavy rain risk and wind. Book indoor brunches, check road conditions, and keep Sunday plans flexible.
In this edition: updated dam levels, May fuel prices, Ulster vs Stormers, Mother's Day ideas, weekend events, the Sunday rain call, load-shedding status and the mid-May calendar.
The system has improved, but remains 11.6 points below the same week in 2025. Theewaterskloof is at 47.7%.
May's increase is now in force. Diesel relief reduced the final hike, but wholesale diesel still jumps R5.27/l.
Kick-off 20:45 at Affidea Stadium. Cape Town watch parties will follow a high-pressure away fixture.
Saturday is best for outdoor plans; Sunday looks wet, windy and better suited to booked indoor lunches.
Water Watch β 48.3%, but still in early drought caution
Better week-on-week, still below last year
The 4 May dashboard puts WCWSS dam storage at 48.3%, a +1.0 percentage point weekly change. Last year, the same system was at 59.9%. The City's status remains Early Drought Caution, meaning there is no immediate reason for concern, but water-wise behaviour is still encouraged because dam levels remain lower than anticipated.
Dam storage trajectory: 2026 vs 2025
Combined WCWSS storage. Latest point is 48.3%; last year same week was 59.9%.
The improvement is meaningful because it shows the first early-winter response in the main system. Berg River and Theewaterskloof both moved up, and the combined WCWSS crossed back toward the 50% caution line.
The practical takeaway is unchanged: May matters. A single wet system can lift sentiment, but Cape Town needs repeat fronts across the mountain catchments to close the gap to last year. Keep the lower-consumption habits in place, especially before the stronger winter rainfall pattern is established.
Fuel & Economy β May prices are now in force
The tax relief helped prevent an even worse diesel outcome, but May is still a heavy transport month. Petrol hurts household budgets directly; diesel carries the wider risk because it pushes freight, food, logistics and public-transport costs.
For Cape Town households, the key budget adjustment is not just the current pump price. Temporary relief is scheduled to unwind over June and July, so the next two fuel announcements may matter as much as May's.
Municipal budget watch moves into decision mode
Public comment on the City's 2026/27 draft budget has closed. The next phase is council consideration and final tariff confirmation before the new municipal year begins on 1 July. Keep an eye on fixed charges, water, sanitation and electricity tariff changes as winter costs start stacking up.

Weekend Picks β 9-10 May
Mother's Day indoors
Pick a reservation-led plan: high tea, lunch, paint-and-sip or a hotel restaurant. The Sunday rain call favours indoor venues.
Saturday morning outdoors
Delheim, De Waal Park and outdoor markets are all better before the Sunday front moves through.
Saturday night energy
Dope Room B2B and the city's nightlife options are the better choice than trying to force Sunday outdoor plans.
Stormers away
Friday 20:45 is a watch-party fixture. The result will shape the away leg before Cardiff on 15 May.
Weather β sunny Friday, cloudy Saturday, wet Mother's Day
Friday is the cleanest weather window: mostly sunny and mild, with a high near 19Β°C. Saturday remains usable, especially earlier in the day, but cloud increases and rain risk rises into the evening.
Sunday is the caution day. Forecasts point to a cold, wet and windy Mother's Day, with heavy rain possible and a high around 14Β°C. That is good news for dam sentiment, but it makes outdoor lunches, mountain plans and long drives more complicated.
Does the Sunday rain change the dam story?
It helps, but one strong weather system is not enough. The system needs repeated catchment rain across May and June. Watch the next two Monday dashboards: if storage keeps moving up, the early May turn will matter.
Safety & Power
Load shedding: still suspended
Grid status remains stable
Eskom's live status remains not load shedding. That does not rule out local outages, municipal faults, cable theft or maintenance, but the national rolling-blackout picture remains much better than in previous winters. Keep checking official channels before assuming a local outage is load shedding.
Wet-road and Sunday driving note
Mother's Day rain may affect roads
With Sunday forecast to bring rain, wind and poor visibility, allow extra time for N1, N2, M3, coastal road and wine-route trips. Avoid low-lying flooded sections, keep valuables out of sight at traffic lights, and do not stop on freeway shoulders unless it is an emergency.
Useful emergency contacts
Looking Ahead β 11 May to late May
The next few weeks are defined by whether May becomes a real winter-rain month, whether fuel relief unwinds cleanly, and whether the Stormers can turn their away leg into a playoff platform. Cultural and sport calendars also get busy again from mid-May onward.
Next dam dashboard after the rain
The next Monday update will show whether the Sunday system delivered meaningful catchment benefit. The big marker is whether the WCWSS number keeps moving toward 50%.
Water watchCardiff Rugby vs DHL Stormers
The Cardiff away fixture follows Ulster and may define the Stormers' playoff route. Kick-off is scheduled for Friday night at Cardiff Arms Park.
URCCandlelight: Ed Sheeran & Coldplay
A mid-May indoor music option at Star Theatre, useful if the weather pattern stays wintery.
MusicCape Town Opera presents Carmen
Cape Town Opera returns to grand opera at Artscape with Bizet's Carmen, one of the big cultural fixtures of late May.
CultureNext fuel price reset
May's relief is temporary. Watch for the June adjustment and the scheduled partial return of fuel levy relief, especially for diesel-sensitive food and freight costs.
Cost watchWinter weather rhythm
The question is whether May settles into repeated cold fronts or remains stop-start. Dams, roads and weekend events all depend on that transition.
Weather watchStar Theatre dance programme
A two-day dance programme at Homecoming Centre features collaborative performances and a competition between emerging professionals.
PerformanceCape Town Marathon build-up
Training shifts into cooler mornings and more weather variability. Plan for wind, rain and darker starts if your route includes the Foreshore or Atlantic Seaboard.
SportNew municipal tariff year
With public comment closed, households should watch for final tariff decisions on water, sanitation, electricity and property-related charges before the new municipal year.
Budget watchThe big picture: May begins with relief and pressure at the same time
Dams have moved in the right direction, but fuel prices have moved sharply the wrong way. The next two weeks will decide whether Cape Town's water outlook starts recovering, and whether household budgets can absorb transport, food and winter utility pressure.
Local's Pick: Saturday morning outside, Sunday lunch inside
The best Cape Town plan this week is to treat Saturday as your outdoor day. Start with a morning event like Sunrise Disco or a conservation walk, keep lunch flexible, and leave Saturday night for either rugby talk or music. Sunday belongs to booked indoor Mother's Day plans.
Practical notes: If you are travelling for Mother's Day, leave earlier than usual, especially if your route includes mountain passes, the N2, the M3, Chapman's Peak or coastal roads. If you have an outdoor Sunday booking, confirm the venue's weather policy before heading out.
