What's up in Cape Town - The Cape Town Weekly | 9-15 March 2026
March 13, 2026
Your guide to the Mother City
A new-city-week edition for a warmer mid-March stretch: free garden days at Kirstenbosch, a three-day tattoo convention at DHL Stadium, Thandiswa under the trees, softer power anxiety, and a dam picture that still needs close watching.
A softer city week after the Tour, but not a quiet one
Cape Town moves from cycle-race logistics into a more open-ended week of gardens, music, markets, theatre and late-summer nights. The big public-value story is National Gardens Week, which runs from 9 to 15 March, with free entry for South African citizens and residents at most SANBI gardens, and free weekday access at Kirstenbosch from 9 to 13 March.
The caution light is still water. The latest available weekly reading for the Cape Town system shows 52.6% storage, down 2.8 percentage points week on week and far below last year's 71.2%. The biggest reservoir, Theewaterskloof, is now at 50.2%.
On the money side, the rand spent this week in the mid-R16s against the dollar: after closing at 16.2869 on Monday 9 March, it moved weaker to 16.5722 by Thursday 12 March. The South African Reserve Bank's repo rate remains at 6.75%, with the next decision due on 26 March.
In this edition: Gardens Week guide, dam levels, weekend events, tattoo convention, weather, rand update, load shedding status, and a quick look at what lands next week.
Bring ID or proof of residence and use the last working days of Gardens Week before normal weekend access rules return.
52.6% is the latest official weekly level, with all six major supply dams now trending lower.
The Tattoo Convention, Starlight Classics, Purified and Thandiswa make this a stacked Friday-to-Sunday run.
Friday and Saturday sit near 27C before Sunday lifts to 30C with increasing cloud.
National Gardens Week - 9-15 March
Practical tip
Go early or late afternoon. Friday is likely the busiest remaining free day at Kirstenbosch, and Sunday is the hottest day of the weekend forecast. Pack water, sunblock and a hat.
Water Watch - Latest weekly reading still under pressure
The system remains well below last year
The latest published Cape Town system reading shows 52.6% total storage, down 2.8 percentage points from the prior week and below the 71.2% recorded at the same time last year. This is not yet a crisis message, but it is still a clear conservation signal.
The latest publicly visible update is dated 6 March 2026, which means this edition is still working off the most recent weekly official release. Every major supply dam in the system is lower week on week. The good news is that storage is still above half-full. The bad news is that the trend line remains pointed down.

Mouille Point Trash Bash
Free beach clean-up led by Two Oceans Aquarium on Saturday morning, 14 March, from 09:00 to 11:00.

Philharmonia Choir
The King and the Chorus lands at Groote Kerk on Sunday afternoon for a more formal city-centre music pick.
Rand & Economy
The mid-March picture is less dramatic than the previous edition's race-week volatility, but the rand has still given back some ground this week. Monday's close near R16.29/$ moved to R16.57/$ by Thursday. The SARB left the repo rate at 6.75% in January and flagged global geopolitical risks, jittery markets and oil-price uncertainty as factors worth watching ahead of the 26 March 2026 meeting.
Weather - warm finish to the week
This weekend looks dry and notably warmer than the early-March front that shaped the last edition. Friday and Saturday both top out at around 27C, while Sunday climbs to 30C with increasing cloud. It is a much more sunscreen-than-rain-jacket setup.
Safety & Power
Load shedding: still suspended
Grid currently stable
Eskom's live status page says the country is currently not load shedding, and its latest 6 March statement said improved generation performance is supporting continued grid stability and longer-term energy security. That does not remove local outage risk from faults, maintenance, cable theft or municipal issues, but it keeps the broad national picture calmer.
Emergency Contacts
Looking Ahead (16-22 March)
19 Mar: Pretty Woman opens
The South African stage debut of Pretty Woman: The Musical opens at Artscape on 19 March and runs through 19 April.
19-20 Mar: News24 On the Record
The CTICC hosts News24's flagship summit focused on unemployment, job creation and economic growth.
22 Mar: Stormers vs Dragons
The DHL Stormers return to DHL Stadium on Sunday 22 March, kick-off 15:00, for a home Vodacom URC clash with Dragons RFC.
22 Mar: Kirstenbosch Sunset Concert
Will Linley and Ben Rodrigues follow this week's Thandiswa show on the next Sunday slot at Kirstenbosch.
Local's Pick: South African International Tattoo Convention
This is the most visually charged event on the calendar this weekend. The convention brings together 120-plus tattoo artists from more than 20 countries at the DHL Stadium Podium, which means you can treat it either as a serious appointment-based tattoo visit or just as a high-energy browse through a very global creative scene.
Pro tip: Pair it with a Green Point or Waterfront day rather than making it the whole plan. Start at the Fan Walk or Promenade, spend a few hours at the convention, then roll into lunch or sunset nearby. It is one of those events that makes Cape Town feel like a much bigger city for a weekend.
