South Africa's music scene has never been more exciting or globally relevant. From Tyla's second Grammy win to Sun-EL Musician's long-awaited return, from the rise of lekompo and Bacardi house to the enduring dominance of amapiano, 2026 is shaping up as a landmark year. Here are the releases, artists, and sounds you need to know.
Tyla β A-Pop
South Africa's double Grammy winner announces her defining sophomore album
Why It Matters
Tyla won her second Grammy for Best African Music Performance in February 2026 for "Push 2 Start" and announced A-Pop backstage at the ceremony. The 24-year-old Johannesburg artist has become the most prominent African pop figure globally, blending amapiano, R&B, and pop into a sound she calls "A-Pop" (African Pop). The album features 19 tracks including the chart-topping lead single "Chanel" and fan favourite "Disco."
What to Expect
Tyla described A-Pop as more confident and personal than her debut. She began work in 2024, letting the music take shape naturally. The tracklist blends her signature popiano sound with experimental R&B. A-Pop is set for release in summer 2026 (Northern Hemisphere) β around winter for South African audiences. HYBE, the South Korean entertainment company, announced a global management partnership with Tyla's team in late 2025, signalling major international push.
"Chanel" (lead single, Oct 2025) topped the US Afrobeats chart for 10+ weeks and reached the Billboard Hot 100. "Push 2 Start" won the Grammy with 125M+ YouTube views.

Kabza De Small & DJ Maphorisa
The Scorpion Kings continue to define amapiano's global moment
The Amapiano Engine
Kabza De Small's Bab' Motha album (July 2025) debuted at No. 9 on the Spotify Global Album Charts β a first for a South African amapiano project. The Scorpion Kings duo with DJ Maphorisa continue to release a steady stream of collaborations that dominate SA streaming charts and taxi playlists alike. "Abantwana Bakho" (featuring Xduppy, Thatohatsi, Young Stunna, and Nkosazana Daughter) has become one of the most significant amapiano releases straddling the 2025-2026 boundary, described as a spiritual celebration of youth and culture.
What's New in 2026
"Ngyozama" (January 2026) is a richly layered collaboration bringing together Dlala Thukzin, Sykes, Young Stunna, Nkosazana Daughter, Tracy, and Thatohatsi. Driven by Kabza's warm piano chords and subtle log drum patterns, it unfolds with patience and depth. Meanwhile, "Iphupho" from Kabza De Small has been climbing the Mzansi charts. Expect more collaborative albums and EPs as the Scorpion Kings machinery keeps evolving the amapiano sound.

Makhadzi β Sesi Ka Rose
Limpopo's queen keeps blazing a trail through Mzansi and beyond
The Album
Makhadzi's Sesi Ka Rose album (September 2025) continues to dominate into 2026. The standout track "Phikoko" (featuring Dr Skaro) blends traditional Tsonga sounds with contemporary Afro-pop production, racking up millions of streams. Makhadzi's signature blend of cultural pride and high-energy performance has made her one of the most bankable live acts in the country, with "Sesi Ka Rose" (featuring Dr Skaro), "Shampopo" (featuring Mapara and Mr Brown), and other tracks charting strongly.
Cultural Impact
Makhadzi represents a distinct thread in SA music β rooted in Limpopo's musical traditions (bolobedu house, tsa manyalo) while embracing mainstream production. Her live shows are legendary spectacles of energy and stamina. In 2026, she remains one of the most-searched South African artists across streaming platforms, bridging the gap between township culture and national pop consciousness.
"Phikoko" is the essential entry point β it's been sitting at or near the top of multiple SA charts for months. Follow up with "Sesi Ka Rose" featuring Dr Skaro and "Tingwenza" for range.
Nkosazana Daughter
The voice of amapiano keeps delivering anthems
Dominant Voice
Nkosazana Daughter (Nolwazi Kimberly Nzama) has cemented her position as the most in-demand vocalist in amapiano. Her collaboration with HarryCane on "Sondela Dali" is charting strongly into 2026, while "Emsakazweni" (featuring Essa Kay and Nobuhle) showcases her distinctive emotional range. Born in Durban, Nzama was mentored by DJ Maphorisa and the late Mpura, and has since collaborated with virtually every major name in the genre.
Key 2026 Tracks
"Abantwana Bakho" (with DJ Maphorisa, Xduppy, Kabza De Small, Thatohatsi, and Young Stunna) is a prayer-like amapiano anthem that's become one of the defining tracks of this period. She features on Kabza De Small's "Ngyozama" and continues to appear on major collaborative projects. Her gold-certified debut Makhelwane (with Master KG, August 2024) achieved 100M+ streams on its first day.
The New Wave
Lekompo, Bacardi house, and the experimental voices reshaping SA music
Lekompo's Moment
Lekompo is the strange, alluring cousin to bolobedu house β blending tsa manyalo wedding rhythms, Shangaan electro's raw speed, and amapiano's log drum patterns into something both familiar and new. Artists like Natiey Lepaka, Kharishma, and Shandesh are pushing the sound into the mainstream, with tracks like "Lekompo Leya America" charting on national platforms. Its roots lie in Limpopo village culture, but its reach is now national.
Bacardi House
Bacardi house β born from early 2000s kwaito energy β re-entered mainstream conversation when artists like Focalistic folded it into their amapiano hybrids. Big Baller CEO's "Hlaba O Be Wete" became a trending sound across social media, and in 2026, artists like Ennyman Da Guitar and Sia_TheBee continue to build the foundation. The genre bridges old-school SA street energy with modern production tools.
Experimental Voices
Dumama (Gugulethu Duma), a Berlin-based South African composer, released "No Abiding City" in January 2026 β an electro-acoustic piece using the uhadi bow alongside glitchy electronic rhythms, drawing from Xhosa hymn traditions. Kold AF's "lost!" explores vulnerability and mental health through music. Naledi Aphiwe and Mawelele closed their long-running collaboration with "Come Duze," a follow-up to their viral hit "Buya Ekhaya."

Popiano
Tyla's signature blend of amapiano rhythms with pop and R&B songwriting, crafted for global radio and playlists. The term "A-Pop" (African Pop) may become the official label as Tyla's influence grows.
Lekompo
A Limpopo-rooted electronic genre blending bolobedu house, tsa manyalo (wedding music), and Shangaan electro with amapiano and gqom elements. Fast, raw, and unmistakably local. Rising rapidly in 2026.
Afro-House
The deeper, more melodic side of South African electronic music. Artists like Sun-EL Musician, Black Coffee, and Zakes Bantwini blend soulful vocals with textured production aimed at both dance floors and headphone listening.
Where to Listen
Streaming
Spotify and Apple Music both have dedicated SA playlists β search "Amapiano Hits," "Mzansi House," or "South Africa Top 40."
