Quick Take

Clifton sits in the wind-shadow of Lion's Head, so when the Cape Doctor howls, these coves stay surprisingly calm β€” a big reason they're Cape Town's classic sundowner beaches.

How to Choose (Time, Wind, Crowd)

Clifton's four coves sit beneath granite boulders and the shoulder of Lion's Head β€” a natural windbreak that mutes Cape Town's infamous south-easter ("Cape Doctor"). When Camps Bay is a sandblaster, Clifton often stays picnic-friendly.

Late afternoons are prime: golden light, calmer air, and the Atlantic turning pewter as the sun drops behind Lion's Head.

Wind Tip

Check the wind forecast before heading out. If the south-easter is above 30 km/h in the city, Clifton's coves are your best bet on the Atlantic Seaboard.

Clifton First Beach

Sporty & Quiet

Vibe

The quietest of the quartet, First Beach draws a sporty crowd and those who prefer space to spread out. Expect more bodyboarding and fewer speakers.

Why Choose It

It's your best bet when the others feel crammed; the boulders here create photogenic corners and protect from side-winds. Note: Steps down can be long β€” carry light.

Clifton Second Beach

Social & Youthful

Vibe

Social and youthful. Think impromptu games, playlists (kept respectful), and groups migrating between the waterline and boulder perches.

Why Choose It

Easygoing energy without Fourth's peak crowds; great for couples meeting friends. Facilities are minimal β€” pack shade and water.

Clifton Third Beach

LGBTQ+ Friendly

Vibe

Compact, intimate and historically LGBTQ+-friendly β€” a long-time favourite for queer Capetonians and visitors. The cove is small, so arrive early on scorchers.

Why Choose It

Cosy scale for two; granite boulders make natural backrests. Space shrinks at high tide, so mind your towel line.

Clifton Fourth Beach (Blue Flag)

Family Friendly

Vibe

The "poster beach": white arc of sand, postcard sunsets, most amenities. Fourth is the all-rounder and usually the widest strand, popular with first-timers and families.

Facilities & Status

Fourth is a Blue Flag beach for the 2025/26 season (Dec 1 – Feb 28), with lifeguards on duty plus public toilets and changing rooms β€” rare luxuries for Clifton.

Blue Flag 2025/26

Clifton 4th is one of eight Cape Town beaches awarded Blue Flag status this season. The certification means strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, and services.

Getting There (Parking & Car-Free)

Parking

Street parking on Victoria Road is very limited and fills fast. Stairs (often "a hundred" of them) descend from the road to each cove β€” plan to carry light and wear good sandals.

MyCiTi Bus

The 106/107 routes connect Cape Town's Civic Centre to the Atlantic Seaboard and Camps Bay; check the 106 timetable and live notices before you go. Some Clifton stops have been intermittently out of operation β€” verify on the day.

Ride-Hail

Uber/Bolt drop-offs are straightforward; set your pin for the specific staircase ("Clifton 4th stairs", etc.).

Parking Warning

Don't leave valuables visible in your car. Break-ins do occur along the Atlantic Seaboard β€” take everything with you down to the beach.

When to Go (Seasons, Wind & Water)

Summer (Dec–Mar)

Peak season. Hot afternoons with cold water (Atlantic temps are brisk), frequent south-easter winds city-wide but often calmer at Clifton's coves. Golden-hour picnics are the move.

Shoulder (Oct–Nov & Apr)

Fewer crowds, softer light; bring a windbreaker for after-sunset chill.

Winter (May–Sep)

Crisp, clear days between cold fronts; smaller crowds and dramatic skies. Always check swell and weather before committing to the steps down.

Water Temperature

The Atlantic side averages 12–16 degrees C year-round. Even in summer, expect a bracing dip β€” it's refreshing but brief for most!

Safety & Beach Etiquette

  • Swim smart: Respect shore-breaks and rip currents; even calm coves can have strong lateral pull. Follow lifeguard flags and instructions when on duty.
  • Rip-current awareness: Read local signage, avoid rocks during high swell, and check NSRI guidance on rip currents.
  • By-laws: Alcohol is prohibited on Cape Town's beaches and is routinely confiscated β€” plan beach picnics accordingly.
  • Noise rules: Law enforcement actively confiscates speakers at Clifton. Keep music low or use headphones.
  • Sun & gear: There's little permanent shade; bring a lightweight umbrella or hire on busy days, plus reef-safe sunscreen and water.
  • Leave no trace: Use bins at the top of the stairs; winds can scatter litter quickly.

FAQ

Which Clifton beach is best for couples?

Third and Fourth. Third for intimacy and LGBTQ+-friendly vibes; Fourth for amenities, lifeguards and easy first-timers' choice.

Where are there bathrooms?

Fourth Beach has public toilets and changing rooms; the other coves have minimal facilities.

Is Clifton good on windy days?

Yes β€” the headland and boulders shield the coves, making Clifton a go-to when Camps Bay is gusty.

Can I get there without a car?

Yes β€” MyCiTi 106/107 (check live status), plus easy ride-hails to the staircases.

Can I see bioluminescence at Clifton?

Occasionally. The Atlantic Seaboard lit up in October 2025 (Clifton and Camps Bay). Sightings are unpredictable but happen on calm, warm evenings β€” look for a daytime "red tide" and return after dark.
