Summer Weather at a Glance

Cape Town's summer season stretches from December through February, delivering long, sun-drenched days with sunset around 8 pm. The famous Cape Doctor β€” a brisk south-easterly wind β€” sweeps through most afternoons, cooling the city and occasionally sending beach hats airborne. Rain is uncommon during these months, though locals love to joke that you can experience all four seasons in one day thanks to the city's microclimates.

Daytime Highs
25 – 35 Β°C
Evening Lows
~15 Β°C (59 Β°F)
UV Index
10 – 11+ (Extreme)
Sunny Days
~300 per year

The UV index regularly reaches extreme levels (10–11 in midsummer), so sun protection isn't optional β€” it's essential. Pack accordingly and you'll be comfortable from a sunrise Lion's Head hike to a twilight cocktail on the Waterfront.

The Atlantic coastline (Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno) has chilly water β€” often just 14–16 Β°C β€” while False Bay beaches (Muizenberg, Kalk Bay) are warmer at 18–22 Β°C.

Clothing & Layers

Packing for a Cape Town summer is all about staying cool during the day and having a light layer ready when the sun dips. Think versatile pieces that mix, match, and layer easily.

👕 Light, Breathable Daywear

Pack cotton or linen t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, and sundresses. Include one or two pairs of long pants and a light long-sleeve for cooler evenings or air-conditioned restaurants.

🧥 Evening & Wind Layers

Bring a light jacket or windbreaker. The Cape Doctor wind can turn a warm day into a breezy afternoon quickly.

🩳 Swimwear

Bring at least two swimsuits. Consider a rash guard if you plan on surfing or longer beach days.

🍸 Going-Out Outfits

Pack one or two smart-casual outfits. Cape Town style is relaxed β€” neat, effortless, and comfortable.

🌧️ Just-in-Case Rain Gear

Summer rain is rare, but a compact umbrella or tiny poncho is a low-space safety net.

Sun Protection & Beach Gear

The African sun is no joke. Whether you're hiking or beach-hopping, protect your skin every day.

🧴 Sunscreen & SPF Essentials

Bring SPF 30–50+, a lip balm with SPF, and consider after-sun if you burn easily.

🏖️ Beach Day Kit

A quick-dry towel, beach tote/daypack, and refillable bottle go a long way. Cape Town’s tap water is safe.

🕶️ Hat & Sunglasses

A hat + UV-blocking sunglasses are your daily essentials β€” especially on the Atlantic side where glare is intense.

Forgot something? Cape Town has excellent shopping for sunscreen, swimwear, and basics β€” don’t over-pack. Save room for souvenirs.

Footwear & Adventure Gear

Cape Town is an active traveller's dream β€” hiking, kayaking, paragliding, biking. Footwear can make or break the day.

👟 Walking Shoes & Sneakers

Comfortable, broken-in sneakers are your #1 item for city exploring and attractions.

⛰️ Hiking Shoes & Trail Gear

Trail runners or light hikers with grip, plus hiking socks and a daypack for water/snacks.

🩴 Flip-Flops & Sandals

Essential for the beach, pool, and quick errands.

🏋️ Activewear

Breathable activewear + a small headlamp if you want sunrise hikes.

Electronics & Power

South Africa uses a three-prong Type M plug with 230V supply. Don’t rely on hotels to have adapters.

🔌 Travel Adapter (Type M)

Bring a dedicated Type M adapter and ideally a multi-USB hub for limited sockets.

🔋 Power Bank

A power bank helps on day trips and during load-shedding (scheduled outages).

📱 Devices & Extras

Chargers, spare memory cards, headphones β€” and consider a local SIM for maps and ride-hailing.

Load-shedding tip: EskomSePush is a popular app for checking scheduled outages by area.

Insider Packing Tips

💰Cash & Cards

Cards are widely accepted, but keep a little cash in Rand for markets, tips, and small vendors.

💊Meds & First Aid

Bring basic first aid and any prescriptions. Pack insect repellent for warm evenings, especially in the Winelands.

🌍Driving on the Left

South Africa drives on the left. If renting a car, bring your licence and consider an International Driving Permit.

🧳Leave Room for Souvenirs

Don’t over-pack toiletries β€” basics are easy to buy locally. Save space for rooibos tea, crafts, and Cape wine.

💧Tap Water Is Safe

Cape Town's tap water is safe to drink. Bring a reusable bottle and refill on the go.
